1 Introduction Some persistent contaminants, including trace elements and organochlorines, are globally distributed as a result of atmospheric transport and deposition in surface waters. In marine ecosystems, these contaminants reach their greatest concentrations in coastal regions, where they accumulate in sediments (Harrison and Peak, ). The concentrations of various POPs have been measured periodically in habitats and tissues of several such species in the Gulf of Maine and Bay of Fundy. Shellfish, such as mussels, filter contaminated particles and absorb the chemicals from seawater.
